The Harmony Society made most of the furniture it needed within the community. The craftsmen built
pieces using their knowledge gained in Württemberg, but they also developed new ways to make
furniture here in America. This exhibit explores the characteristics of different types of furniture made
by the Society and discusses its significance within this communal group.
The exhibit has been developed as a result of the upcoming book, Harmony in Wood, written by
Philip Zimmerman and made possible by grants from the Richard C. von Hess Foundation, the Heinz
Endowments, the Julia Lea Hillman-Simonds Foundation, and the Gookin Family Foundation. The
exhibit is being made possible, in part, by a grant from the Pennsylvania Humanities Council.
