Modern Research for Historic Preservation

Flax Driven Soil Remediation & Balancing

Trials conducted at Old Economy Village in 2025 focused on an in-depth review of soil chemistry and structure within the historic gardens alongside a regional investigation on impacts of both historical and modern industrial operations. This trial was proposed following the initial evaluation of the historic gardens and documentation of previous management practices under review as of July 2024. Restoration and preservation efforts often overlook our living history. This research would be the first steps in illuminating the necessity of restoring balance in soil and plant health in order to revive historic garden spaces, interpret history and better serve the public, particularly in urban and suburban areas.
